OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Pedestrians, drivers, and boaters will need to make adjustments soon when a major construction project begins on the Main Street Bridge in downtown Oshkosh.
Construction begins on Sept. 2 and runs all the way until mid-April. According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials the project will accomplish several things:
- Rehabilitate existing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and structural components of the bascule span
- Minor repairs to the operator’s house and access platforms
- Scarification (removal) and overlay of the approach span concrete deck
- Removal and replacement of the steel grid deck on the movable span
Boaters can continue to go under the bridge until the end of the navigation season on Oct. 15. Pedestrians like Gerald Drews, who frequently takes walks on the bridge with his daughter, (there’s a sidewalk on both sides) will need to find a more immediate workaround for his usual walking route.

“With all the work that has been going on I’m not surprised that something has shut down,” Drews said. It’s going to suck traffic wise going the other on Oregon. It’s going to be what it’s going to be. Unfortunately now we have to tell her (his daughter) that we can’t go this way to see all the ducks and boats.”
Project officials will divert traffic via 9th Avenue, Oregon Street, and Jackson Street. They encourage pedestrians to use other bridges that cross the river and the river walk.

WISDOT officials also have prepared resources for business owners worried about how the closure will impact them. Those resources can be found here.

“I hope it’s much better by the time it’s done than it is now,” Drews said.
