Green Bay third grader discovers personal connection to book’s author

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – A third-grade student at Doty Elementary School in Green Bay recently made a surprising discovery while reading a book—she personally knew the author.

The student realized that Miranda Paul, the author of “One Plastic Bag,” was someone familiar to her. After learning of the connection, her teacher, Todd Lowney, reached out to Paul, who agreed to visit the class.

One Plastic Bag tells the true story of a woman in Africa who started a movement to recycle plastic bags and clean up her community. Paul hopes the students take away two key messages from her book.

“I hope they take away two things, one which is the message of the story, that one person can make a difference through actions, and the other thing is that reading and writing is something that can be really cool and fun,” Paul said.

Paul has written several other books with impactful messages, including “Water Is Water,” “Nine Months,” and “Whose Hands Are These?”
