GREEN BAY, Wis., (WFRV) – An area along the Fox River vacant for over 50 years is being reimagined as Green Bay’s Shipyard enters phase two of transformation.
Local leaders say the goal for the space is to make it a tourist destination and a communal gathering spot.

The Parks Committee revealed their new renderings, and On Broadway, Inc. CEO Brian Johnson says that the city designed the space to meet the needs of the residents.
“We created a park that is not only a destination park where people want to come and visit, but also one that serves the needs of the neighborhood,” Johnson said.
Phase Two includes a large concert lawn, new playground equipment, a dog park and improved public access to the river. It builds on years of environmental cleanup, important progress for a site that was previously contaminated and located in a floodplain.
“This was an unused space that needed a lot of prep work,” Johnson said. “We’ve put in that effort, and now we’re building something the community can be proud of.”
This project is funded by various grants, with $5 million donated by the National Park Service. So far, taxpayers have not footed the bill for Phase Two.

“None of the project has been supported by property taxes right now,” Johnson said. “The National Park Service has provided a $5 million grant that will help anchor the funding source for phase two.”
The next phase is scheduled to start in the next year and be finished by 2027.
