WAUPACA, Wis. (WFRV) – Jurors are now deliberating the fate of Tony Haase, a man accused of killing two people in a brutal 1992 double murder that shocked the town of Royalton more than 30 years ago.
Haase is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of Tanna Togstad and Timothy Mumbrue. Their bodies were found in Togstad’s home in March 1992, with Togstad reportedly suffering a single stab wound to the chest and Mumbrue found with multiple injuries. A dog at the scene was also killed.

Investigators said there was no evidence of robbery or forced entry, and the murder weapon was never found.
The case remained unsolved for decades, until a DNA sample collected from Haase during a 2022 traffic stop reportedly matched DNA found at the original crime scene. The complaint states the DNA was recovered from “foreign bodily fluids” on Togstad’s body.

During questioning, Haase denied any involvement but admitted he feared he may have been responsible after seeing news coverage of the crime. He claimed to have “snippets” of memories over the years, but maintained he had no clear recollection of committing the murders.
Now, after days of testimony, the decision rests with the jury. Local 5 News will continue to follow the trial and provide updates as soon as a verdict is reached.
