Appleton businessman gets two years in prison for not paying over $1 million in employment taxes

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – A 72-year-old Appleton man was sentenced on April 4 to 24 months in prison for his failure to pay owed employment taxes of over $1 million.

Richard G. Frohling, the Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced the sentencing on Monday. Court records showed that Larson owned Mods International (known as Mods Client Services), which manufactured and installed buildings from shipping containers.

Larson failed to pay over $1 million in employment taxes that he had owed for nearly 14 years while purchasing multiple luxuries for himself and his wife.

“This defendant withheld taxes from the employees of his businesses but willfully refused to pay the money over to the U.S.,” Acting U.S. Attorney Frohling said. β€œHe not only breached the trust of his employees but also caused a loss to every American taxpayer.”

Senior United States District Judge William Griesbach oversaw the case, highlighting the persistence of the crime and the amount of money he refused to pay. Larson also has a history of fraud convictions, stemming back to the 1970s and throughout his adulthood.

Judge Griesbach added that he would have considered a higher sentence for Larson, as it would have been warranted if not for Larson’s health conditions.
