Explosion in De Pere causes estimated $550,000 in fire damages and complete loss of two-story duplex

DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) – An explosion and fire in De Pere on Saturday afternoon caused an estimated $550,000 in damages along with one person being hospitalized for minor injuries.

The De Pere Fire Rescue said that crews were dispatched to the scene of the duplex fire at 2020 Terry Lane on Saturday around 1:43 p.m. Brown County Dispatch said that one person had escaped to the roof with smoke showing.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to the sight of a two-story duplex with smoke from all sides of the house. The person on the roof was helped down by occupants of the adjoined duplex.

All people were confirmed to be out of the residence; however, there were still pet cats inside. Multiple windows were broken with debris in the yard, indicating signs of an explosion, and the fire was located in the basement.

Fire personnel extinguished the flames from the outside access.

According to the release, the cats were found and safely returned to their owners unharmed. One person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. All others were evaluated and released from the scene.

Crews from multiple other departments were called to assist with fire operations. The Brown County Fire Investigation team is currently investigating the cause of the explosion, which caused an estimated $550,000 in damages and the duplex being rendered a complete loss due to structural damages.
