Failed extension cord deemed the cause of fire in Wisconsin, surrounded 30×30 shed

CALEDONIA, Wis. (WFRV) – An extension cord failure in Wisconsin led to a wildland fire surrounding a property on three sides, fully engulfing a 30 by 30 shed, along with another wildland fire that spread from a barrel around a house.

Around 12:07 p.m. on Monday, the Portage Fire Rescue was sent to the scene of N6431 County Highway U for a reported wildland fire that spread from a barrel around a house and through the nearby marsh and woods.

Crews worked with the Department of Natural Resources Low Unit to extinguish the fire.

Alliant Energy assisted with utilities as well.

Extension Cord Fire

According to the Portage Fire Department, crews were dispatched to W11011 Petra Road around 3:17 p.m. on Monday for a reported shed fire. Crews found a wildland fire surrounding the property on three sides.

The heat caused impingement on the house, spreading to the porch and attic. Crews worked to prevent the spread from breaking out further, while other crews worked to extinguish the shed fire.

The remainder worked with the Department of Natural Resources Heavy Unit to suppress the wildland fire.

Multiple other agencies showed up following a working still, including the following:

  • Arlington Fire Department
  • Merrimac Fire Department
  • Baraboo Fire Department
  • Endeavor Fire Department

Portage EMS responded to monitor crews and residents throughout, and Alliant Energy cut the power to failed powerlines in the driveway. The County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene as well.

No injuries were reported, as the fire was deemed to be caused by a failed extension cord running across the ground that supplied the shed’s power.
