Fire causes extensive damage at Fond du Lac apartment complex

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Fond du Lac say three adults and a baby are now staying with relatives for the time being after a fire Wednesday night caused extensive damage to their apartment.

According to a release from the Fond du Lac Fire Rescue, firefighters responded at 8:03 p.m. to an apartment complex on 171 South Royal Avenue for reports of a fire.

Upon arrival, officials say crews were met with smoke coming from the attic of the second floor of a 16-unit apartment complex.

The fire was knocked down quickly but not before it caused extensive damage to the kitchen of the apartment and water damage to the apartment below.

At this time, the cause of the fire is suspected to be a stove that was left on but officials are still working to confirm the fire’s cause.

No other information is available and the Fond du Lac Fire Rescue is encouraging the public to follow the following safety tips to avoid stove top fires:

  • Maintain working smoke alarms.
  • Never leave a stove unattended.
  • Keep combustibles away from the cooking surface.
  • Heat oils slowly or over moderate heat.
  • Reduce heat; utilize a metal lid or cooking sheet to reduce splatter or fire spread
