TOWN OF CARLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Change could be coming to the small town of Carlton in rural Kewaunee County, but there are still lots of unanswered questions.
That uncertainty is what’s frustrating nearby residents. Dozens of people packed the town of Carlton town hall on Monday night for an informational session seeking answers from local officials and state Senator Andre Jacque.
A company called EnergySolutions now owns the former nuclear power plant site in the town of Carlton. Town officials said they’ve heard from residents who say people are coming up to them and trying to get them to sign a contract to give up their land near the power plant site.

A town supervisor said he knows of at least three nearby landowners who have sold their land. Right now, there’s no definitive answer when it comes to what EnergySolutions plans to do with the nuclear power plant site or any nearby land they purchase.
Town officials speculate that turning it into a solar farm, wind farm, AI server house, or converting it back into a nuclear power plant may all be on the table.
Jacque said it’s important for him to stand up for the concerns of his constituents and said he’s pushing hard for answers. He said it’s unacceptable that EnergySolutions hasn’t been more transparent about their plans.
Officials hope that town halls like this will signal to EnergySolutions that people in this area care about what’s happening and that they deserve answers.
Senator Jacque and other officials advised residents to be careful about what they’re signing and to make sure they’re thoroughly reading and understanding any contracts given to them.
