SHAWANO, Wis. (WFRV) – Students from the Menominee Indian School joined the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Monday to capture and release sturgeon on the Wolf River, returning the sacred fish to tribal waters north of the Shawano Dam.
The effort gave students a unique opportunity to connect with their culture while exploring potential careers in conservation and natural resources.

“It’s a rare opportunity that my students have to work with all these different organizations, especially when it comes to careers,” said Christine Fossen-Rades, an integrated science teacher at Menominee Indian High School. “We have quite a few different careers represented here, and the students are able to get their hands wet—and literally slimy—and work hands-on with the fish.”
The Menominee Tribe will continue its tradition of honoring the sturgeon with a feast on Saturday.
