St. Norbert College to cut programs, reduce faculty amid enrollment concerns

DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) – St. Norbert College has announced the discontinuation of several academic programs and a reduction in faculty positions to better align with its student population.

According to a statement from the college, the Board of Trustees has approved the elimination of multiple majors and minors, although courses in these disciplines will still be offered. Affected programs include:

  • General Chemistry Major
  • Geology Major; Environmental Geology Major
  • French and Francophone Studies Major and Minor
  • History Major
  • International Studies Major
  • Theoretical Math Major; Applied Math Major
  • Physics Major and Minor; Engineering Physics
  • Spanish Major
  • Theatre Studies Major and Minor
  • Theology and Religious Studies Major and Minor

Despite these cuts, the college emphasized its commitment to providing courses in the humanities, arts, natural sciences, and social sciences. Current students enrolled in discontinued programs will be able to complete their studies.

The college also announced a faculty reduction, citing a need to “align with the size of our student population more closely.” Of the 106 total faculty positions, 66 will be retained. Twenty-one positions will be terminated in May 2025, and six more will be cut in May 2026. Thirteen positions are currently vacant.

“Our college exceeds national norms regarding the percentage of tenured or tenure-track faculty members on campus,” the statement read, adding that adjustments are necessary given the institution’s current situation.
