Authorities responded to the crash at the intersection of East Wisconsin Street and South Water Street after a westbound SUV hit a car making a left turn from Wisconsin onto Water Street. Officers say the SUV was being driven by a 47-year-old, and the car was driven by an 85-year-old, both from Sparta.

The officer’s preliminary investigation showed that the speed of the SUV, combined with sudden braking, caused it to overturn on impact, knocking down a traffic light in the process.

Officers also noted that the car was traveling through a flashing yellow arrow during the left turn. “This is a good reminder that yellow lights mean you must yield to other traffic and pedestrians,” the Sparta PD Facebook post read.

Two people in the SUV were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.
