Wisconsin man arrested after allegedly trespassing, displaying handgun

DE SOTO, Wis. (WFRV) – A 39-year-old Wisconsin man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly trespassing on private property and displaying a handgun when confronted, authorities say.

According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, a report was made around 6:30 p.m. regarding a person trespassing on private property along State Highway 82 in rural De Soto, near the Iowa-Wisconsin border.

When the property owners attempted to confront the individual, the suspect fled in a vehicle. Witnesses reported that the suspect allegedly brandished a handgun while leaving.

Deputies responded to the scene and found several items near where the vehicle had been parked. Authorities later identified the suspect as 39-year-old Lukas Mesa of Mauston.

At approximately 8 p.m., deputies from the Vernon County and Crawford County Sheriff’s Offices responded to Ridge Street in De Soto after receiving reports that Mesa was parked in the area. When a deputy arrived, Mesa allegedly fled again.

The investigation continued into Monday, and around 1:30 p.m., Mesa was taken into custody without further incident at a residence on Smythe Avenue in De Soto.

Mesa made his initial court appearance Tuesday, where a judge set his cash bond at $2,500.

Additionally, 37-year-old Nicholas Smythe was taken into custody during the investigation on a probation warrant.
